The Breacher’s Playbook, co-written with Navy SEAL Tom Hruby, follows the remarkable journey of Deklan Novak, beginning after high school with Deklan’s decision to forgo college and become a professional MMA fighter. With a record of 7-0, the 9/11 attacks turn Deklan’s title-belt dreams into a mission to join the most difficult club in the world to join, the Navy SEALs.
After a ten year decorated career as a breacher for SEAL Team One and multiple combat deployments, Deklan returns to college and enrolls at Northwestern University in 2013 where he becomes a walk-on Division-1 linebacker at age 33. To his surprise, Deklan’s days of making life and death decisions are not over. Deklan’s unique skills are called upon again before leaving Northwestern.
Following graduation, Deklan becomes an FBI Special Agent assigned to the Violent Crimes Against Children (VCAC) squad based out of the FBI Chicago field office. Deklan’s squad is uniquely successful in tracking, locating and removing predators from society.
The mystery thriller lays the groundwork for what the authors describe as a recurring character who is hard, fast, and mean as a razor wire. Deklan’s life path is one of determination and sacrifice in the face of defeat. That grit is what he leans on in his role as a tough FBI agent tasked with unraveling the disappearance of two children from a daycare center owned by his mother in this first installment.
This debut narrative, the first in a planned three-book series, is a fictional account based on Hruby’s real-life story.

My name is Tom Hruby. I am the co-author with James Pomerantz of The Breacher’s Playbook — my first published book. James is the real genius behind this project. Although I wrote many portions of The Breacher’s Playbook, without James’s brilliance my writing would merely be a series of disjointed short stories. I stand in awe and appreciation for the opportunity to work with and learn from James and experience his creative genius. I consider myself more of an adventurer and explorer, rather than a writer. When I met James, I was playing football at Northwestern University. He was researching characters for a novel he was working on. I was not very interested in writing my story, but over the years James and I stayed in touch and became friends. We eventually agreed to create the fictional protagonist, Deklan Novak, whose life is based on many of my own experiences.
